Iomega 34508 eSATA DVR 1TB Expander Drive

Iomega 34508 eSATA DVR 1TB Expander Drive Review

This thing was an absolute breeze to set up. Once it formatted the first time, I did have to unplug the power to the DVR box once more so it would reboot again before it showed as more space, but still very very easy to install and use. I was prepared to lose the recordings I had once I installed this expander, but I didn't have any problems keeping the old recordings. Your mileage may vary.

Only minor negative is that the included eSATA cable does not feel terribly secure when it's plugged in, a slight inadvertent yank on the cable and it feels like it could come loose. As long as you're aware while you're working behind the box to double check and make sure the eSATA cable is secure then you should be ok.

Installed on a Cox San Diego Scientific Atlanta 8300HD.

Didn't work for me. - hockey-dad - Syracuse, NY
Attached it to my Time Warner Scientific American 8300. Caused a lot of pixelation and skipping when this was attached (no problem after removing it). Iomega support said it was a defective unit wanted to replace it with a refurb but I chose to return it for money back. Had high hopes, but I wasn't one of the lucky ones that this worked for.

Compatible w/Scientific Atlantic 8300HDC - Iomega DVR Expander Resolved My Frustrations - JR - HONOLULU, HI, US
Originally purchased Western Digital DVR Expander WDG1S10000 based on WD's claim that product worked with the SA 8300 series DVR. Experienced various problems with WD Expander from unexpected DVR reboots to corrupt or unplayabe recordings - resorted to even trying older model 8300 HD DVR without success. Research revealed WD DVR Expanders "have not been tested and are not supported on the SA 8300 HDC". I suppose this is some sort of WD disclaimer.

On the otherhand, Iomega specifially states their DVR Expander "is" compatibily with Scientific Atlantic DVR's. Since installed to SA 8300 HDC about a month ago, Iomega DVR has worked flawlessly.

I'm sure the WD Expander is compatible with other DVR/cable systems.

Iomega 34508 eSATA DVR 1TB Expander Drive - Outstanding - Garvin Malow - AZ, USA
So, I did a lot of checking on various solutions to expanding out Cox SA 8300HD and this had the best overall ratings at Amazon and other places. BTW, this is not one of the drives Cox recommends, so I had a bit of concern. It arrived, it worked, it's exactly what it should be. Unplug the DVR, plug in the Iomega and esata cable. Plug the DVR back in and let it boot (with the TV on). The DVR asks if you want to format the Iomega (at the bottom of the TV screen) - say "yes". No indication it's formatting, but after some time (I waited an hour), unplug and replug the DVR again. The Iomega now works, the 85% full is onow 4%, once again good triumphs over evil. We've had it for several weeks, no playback problems. It just works. Highly recommended.

works perfectly - Chris Broussard - kapaa, hawaii United States
I recieved this a few days ago, just got around to hooking it up. I have a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HDC DVR from Time Warner cable here on Kauai. I essentially followed the instructions for "Quick Setup", didn't have to do much else, it may have bypassed the "reformat" request though the window came up briefly it went away before I could react. My used space went from almost 20% to 7%, all my saved movies are still there and play. I am looking forward to using this as I have often run out of recording space.
