Iomega MiniMax Hard Drive, FireWire 400/USB 2.0, 1TB - 33957 Review

I've had the 1tb minimax for about 4 months now and it is still working fine. No computer recognition, power on, failure/crash issues. Although I've only turned it on several times. When I first received it I used it as a storage drive, transferring about 200gb at once. later I created a partition of about 280gb to make a bootable backup copy of my 250gb drive using the SuperDuper freeware software. That went smoothly. Then a few times after that I've used it as storage, adding several gigs at a time. I don't use the included software or the usb features but use it via firewire plug and play with a macbook. It seems functional. It makes some noise when transferring data but is very quiet when not accessed. Most of the time I don't have it plugged in. There you go. I can't say much more, but will update once it keels over on me or is still working in a year.

When I was shopping with my friend for a HD for my Mac Mini Media, stumbled upon Iomega HD FireWire 400. Some of my friends also opined this to be a good one. On using it, barring a few problems, I felt the same way too coz I dint have hassles at any point. With 1TB I can load it with as many of my multimedia as I want on my McMini. Transferring 550 gb of my music files took shorter than expected. The three hubs are something that I was really looking out for..


Happy that it was formatted for my Mac Mini which saved me a lot of time and effort. Though some of my friends rue about the short Firewire cable I find it only useful because there is not too much of wire dangling out.





Be Wary - Failure Prone Drives - BritNick55 - NJ

I have owned FOUR MiniMax drives. ALL have failed. (Note: They were the 500 GB Capacity).

I bought 2 and both failed within the warranty period. Both were replaced under warranty with remanufactured replacements. Both replacements failed after about 1 year. Iomega's warranty on the replacement is limited, but at this point I no longer trust Iomega and cannot be bothered to go through a return process to get another drive that I would never trust.

Form factor is great - so perhaps it will now be a useful paperweight......

Make sure you backup all your data on some other drive.



Great External HDD - GRiver -
Just picked up this drive a couple weeks ago. Had it out of the box and backing up my MacBook in less than 5 min. Didn't hurt that I got a great deal on the drive as well. I appreciate that Iomega stands behind their drive with a 3 year warranty. So, while I have not had it for very long, out of the box it is very impressive and if you own a Mac with FireWire 400 and aren't looking for a portable drive this is a great option.
